I have tried seven AI note-taking apps in the last year. The rest are either too slow, too expensive, or too opinionated. Here is the winner and why it stuck.

The Contenders

I tested: Notion AI, Obsidian + Copilot, Mem.ai, Reflect, Tana, Capacities, and Amplenote.

My criteria were simple:

  • Fast capture (can I get an idea down in under 3 seconds?)
  • Good search (can I find it again in under 10 seconds?)
  • AI that actually helps (not just summarizes for the sake of it)
  • Reasonable price (under $15/month)

The Winner: Reflect

Reflect won because it does the basics well and the AI actually saves time instead of adding steps.

Here is what I like:

  • Instant capture: Command+Shift+R opens a quick note from anywhere. No loading, no waiting.
  • Backlinks that work: I link ideas as I write them. Reflect surfaces related notes automatically.
  • AI that asks questions: Instead of just summarizing, Reflect's AI asks follow-up questions. It feels like a conversation.

What I Dislike

It is not perfect. The mobile app is slower than the desktop version. And the AI sometimes suggests connections that are not actually relevant. But the hit rate is about 80%, which is good enough.

The Price

Reflect is $15/month. That is more than I wanted to pay, but I use it every day. The time I save on finding and connecting ideas is worth it.

Honorable Mentions

  • Obsidian: Still the best for pure note-taking. The AI plugins are getting better but they are not seamless yet.
  • Tana: Fascinating concept. Too opinionated for my workflow. Might be perfect for you if you think in databases.
  • Capacities: Beautiful design. Slower than Reflect for daily capture.

My Recommendation

If you just want a fast, reliable note-taking app with useful AI, get Reflect. If you want something free and powerful, stick with Obsidian and wait for the AI plugins to mature.
